WoW Forever

Merchant's FavorThe new profession recipes of WoW Forever, and how to get them

WoW Forever adds 317 profession recipes that no trainer teaches: armor for tailors, leatherworkers and blacksmiths, potions, enchants, engineering gadgets. They are sold at two trade camps, one per faction, and you pay for them with a new currency: Merchant’s Favor.

You earn Favor by filling crates that you find on monsters and bringing them to the camp. Anyone can do it from level 10, whatever your class and your professions.

This guide takes you through it step by step: where the camps are, how to fill a crate, what Craftsman’s Writs are for, and which recipes I would buy first.

How it works

Four steps, always the same. Merchant’s Favor is a currency, like gold or honor, that only the two trade camps take.

The camps

Each faction has its own camp, run by a trade company: the Azeroth Commerce Authority for the Alliance, Durotar Supply and Logistics for the Horde. Both sell exactly the same things at the same prices.

Who does what at the camp

Each profession has its own vendor, who sells its recipes. The other people take your crates or sell the extras.

Next to the crates you will find either an auctioneer or a bank, depending on the time of day. There is no mailbox, so bring your materials with you.

Redridge Mountains is a contested zone: on a PvP realm, Horde players can attack you at the Alliance camp. The Horde camp is in Horde territory.

Crates: how to earn Favor

Crates are the only way to earn Favor. Here is how a crate goes from a monster’s loot to Favor in your bags.

Find a crate

Ordinary monsters sometimes drop one, roughly from level 7 to 26, and so do some chests and dungeon monsters. Their name starts with “Waylaid Crate”, like the Waylaid Crate: Apprentice Herbs on the right.

They are rare: most players find one to three on their way to level 20. Crates can be traded, so the auction house is the quickest way to get more. Search for the start of their name.

The middle of the name gives the crate’s level: Apprentice and Journeyman crates can be used from level 10, Expert from level 20 and Artisan from level 35. On the beta, only Apprentice and Journeyman crates have been seen so far.

Use: Fill the crate with any bundle from the following list:

Fill it

Right-click the crate. It shows a list of materials, for example 20 Peacebloom or 20 Silverleaf. You only need one line of that list, not all of them.

Then click the stack you want to use in your bags. The crate takes the first stack you click, so click the cheapest one. You do not need a gathering profession: the materials can be bought at the auction house.

If a crate refuses a stack, check that the whole amount is in one stack. Before a recent beta update, Handful of Copper Bolts and Copper Tube stacked to 10, so the 16 some crates ask for could not fit.

Hand it in at the camp

Once filled, the crate becomes a Sealed Apprentice Crate. Bring it to Marcy Baker (Alliance) or Dokimi (Horde) at the camp.

The first time, you also get a Shipping Label. It starts a quest that leads you to the camp and pays an extra 50 Favor, once per character.

Crates that take raw materials (herbs, ore, cloth) are white and pay the least. Crates that take crafted goods (cloth bolts, metal bars, engineering parts) are green and pay twice as much.

Legacy, WoW Forever’s account-wide bonuses, has a perk that sometimes doubles the Favor of a crate: Performance Bonus, in the Professions tree.

What goes in each crate

The end of a crate’s name tells you its kind (herbs, ore…), the middle its level. Find your crate in the table: one of the lines in its box fills it. Under each kind, the professions that gather or make those materials, if you want to make them yourself.

Which crates I fill

Herb crates are the cheapest: 20 Peacebloom or 20 Silverleaf cost almost nothing at the auction house. Mishka Kuma paid about one silver for five Favor that way. Crates of enchanting materials (Curiosities) are the most expensive.

If you already make cloth bolts, metal bars or engineering parts for your profession, fill the green crates: twice the Favor for goods you make anyway.

What to buy

Favor comes slowly: a 30-Favor recipe takes two to six crates. So buy what you will use right away.

Tailors, leatherworkers, blacksmiths: your armor pieces

The camp sells new armor patterns for 30 Favor each. At level 20, the pieces they make are better than most of what you find at that level. Start with the head piece (wearable at level 20), then boots (17), gloves (15) and belt (12). If a dungeon already gave you a good piece for a slot, skip that one.

The table below shows which pieces I put first for each class and specialization in my level-20 gear lists.

Enchanters: your class relic

Paladins, shamans and druids have a relic slot (a libram, a totem or an idol). The camp sells three for 45 Favor each, at Enchanting 130: Tenets of the Silver Hand for paladins, Polished Driftwood Icon for shamans, Mystic Mushroom for druids who heal or cast. Each is the best relic at level 20 in my gear lists.

Alchemists and engineers: later

Most alchemy and engineering recipes ask for a skill of 165 or more, which you will not have early on. A piece of armor you wear in every fight does more for you at level 20 than a potion.

Profession titles

Once you reach 300 in a crafting profession, its vendor sells a certificate for 1,000 Favor, such as the Alchemy Certification. It unlocks the matching title (the Alchemist, the Blacksmith, the Enchanter, the Engineer, the Leatherworker, the Tailor) for all your characters. A character shows it only if it has 300 in that profession too. Cooking has no title.

Pet, toy, mount, tabard

These need no profession.

What a whole profession costs

To give you an idea of the scale: every recipe of a profession, title included, counted in the best-paying crates you can use now (20 Favor each). Nobody needs them all: most armor pieces come in five or six versions, one for each set of stats.

Craftsman’s Writs: crafting orders

Monsters also drop crafting orders called Craftsman’s Writs: someone in the world wants a crafted item. Deliver it and you get reputation with the camp and a pouch of silver. You do not need writs to buy recipes: they are the way to raise your reputation.

Find a writ

It drops from monsters like crates do, as a sealed envelope: Sealed Craftsman's Writ. It can be traded, so the auction house sells them too.

Open it

Right-click it: you get the order itself, which names one item, and a quest. There are 150 different orders. Each asks for a single item, except the one for Crafted Solid Shot (200).

Get the item

Craft it if you have the profession, or buy it at the auction house. The place to deliver it appears on your map only once the item is in your bags.

Deliver it

The customer can be anywhere in the world, often a lone goblin: Arathi Highlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands, Duskwood, Stranglethorn Vale, Ashenvale, Stonetalon Mountains, Thousand Needles. Keep the order in your bags, the quest needs it.

You get reputation and a Coin Pouch with 22 to 45 silver at level 20 (Mishka Kuma got 40). Each order can be done once a day, and players report 8 to 14 hours to deliver it once you have taken the quest.

How much reputation a writ gives

Writs come in three levels. The higher the level, the harder the item is to make and the more reputation it gives. The skill is the profession level needed to craft the item.

Only five professions have writs, 30 each: Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring.

When I buy writs at the auction house, I pick the ones for items I can make myself: a writ for a cheap item costs more than a writ for an expensive one, since the buyer has to pay for the item too.

A writ you do not want? The Uncertified Scribe, just south of the Alliance camp, sells a Forger's Quill: it turns an order into another one of the same level.

Reputation with the camp

Like every faction in WoW, the camp has a reputation bar, from Neutral to Exalted. Here it only unlocks two items: the toy license at Honored and the tabard at Exalted. Recipes do not need it.

You start at Neutral. Honored takes 9,000 reputation: after the 2,000 of your first crate, that is about 94 Journeyman writs, 56 Expert or 35 Artisan.

Exalted takes 42,000: about 534 Journeyman writs, 320 Expert or 200 Artisan.

Another way: the Uncertified Scribe sells a Forged Delivery Receipt. Stick it on an empty crate instead of filling it, and hand that crate in for 50 reputation instead of Favor.

Two players report that the Pack Kodo and the enchanting relics sold at 300 skill also need Honored. The vendor data on Wowhead shows no such requirement; I will update this once someone buys one.
